Introduction to Southern River Terrapin in Malaysia
The Southern River Terrapin is found only in Cambodia and Malaysia. They are threatened by a numerous anthropogenic threats and the DWNP and TCS are working tirelessly to restore the depleted wild populations of terrapins in our rivers.

Lachryphagy is a fascinating evolutionary adaptation by insects to get the nutrients they require. It is remarkable to see how unlikely organisms can be interlinked, such as turtles and butterflies, and serves as a reminder that all organisms should be protected, as there are bound to be others that rely upon them to thrive.
Do we have albino turtles?
Leucism and albinism are two examples of color mutations that cause color loss and result in distinct phenotypes. Leucism has a variety of meanings, and some authors refer to it as a form of incomplete albinism. However, leucistic animals have diminished or missing color but normal eye pigmentation, whereas true albinos lack pigmentation and have red or pinkish eyes.
How does a turtle’s shell grow?
The carapace and plastron of a turtle, which are the upper and lower parts of the shell, consist of bony plates covered in scutes made of keratin. To accommodate for the increasing size of a turtle’s body, new, wider scutes grow beneath the existing scutes, which are then shed to make way for the new ones.

Why do sea turtles return to the beach that they were hatched from?
Studies have discovered that female turtles demonstrate natal homing behaviour in that they always return to the exact location where they were hatched to mate and lay their own eggs whereas the male turtles almost never return to the same beach once they leave the sand of their natal beach.

Overcoming the devils in my head
At times, I practiced the talk several times and improved on my presentation skills, after all, I’d be talking to a group of 11-year-old students! I was excited and nervous at the same time!
An eye-opening experience leading a big group of students
A day before the 2D1N programme, I had a fear of facing the big group of students and I was worried that I might forget any of the duties that were assigned to me. I kept thinking to myself, “Cabita, you can do it. Do it with full confidence and always be aware of the critical situations that you might face during the programme.”

Love is all we need
The year has seen us forge great relationships with local communities which was instrumental in the success and growth of our project. It proves that we simply can’t do without community engagement. Conservation isn’t solely an endeavour by NGOs alone, we need the help of the local community to really make a difference. To put it succinctly, conservation is a task for everyone.
