Tell us about the turtle conservation projects carried out by WWF-Malaysia
The WWF-Malaysia turtle teams work at 3 project sites, and they are in Padang Kamunting and the surrounding beaches in Melaka, as well as Kerteh and Setiu in Terengganu. We work closely with the Department of Fisheries on several fronts, which include beach patrolling and hatchery management, egg buy-back, training the rangers and egg collectors, scientific research, as well as community education and awareness.
What do you do as a turtle conservationist?
As the Team Leader for WWF-Malaysia’s Terengganu Turtle Conservation, my work broadly involves ensuring our team delivers the project outputs and activities in accordance with the agreed work plan, time frame and within the prescribed budget. We also update our funders regularly either in writing or personally, and sometimes both, on the status of our project.
Turtle conservation in Malaysia from the perspective of the media
As a media practitioner, it is heartening to see that local journalists i.e. those in Terengganu in particular are taking a keen interest on the issue which is at their doorstep.
Myths and famous local stories on turtles
Turtle eggs are notaphrodisiacs. Scientists have analysed the nutrient content of turtle eggs and found them to be no better than chicken eggs.
Are turtles protected by the Malaysian laws?
The Wildlife Protection Act 1972 lists several levels of protection for endangered species of wild animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects), but completely omitted all species of terrapins and tortoises.
Can turtles spread diseases to humans?
If any, it has mostly been through contact with contamination in the water or on the turtle itself. The causative agent is usually Salmonella or E. coli.

Terrapin Museum :: Day 03 :: half-way point!
Splitting into 2 teams today helped as team 1 covered the design & printing of the infographics & exhibits, while team 2 worked on the remaining facade, stripping of the carpets and repairing some of the carapace.

Setting up a museum was a breeze since we have had 40 combined years of both, sea turtles and river terrapins research and experience, under our belts. Plus, not forgetting the Kg Mangkok experience, which allowed us to speed things up a lot more!
Happy New Year!!! Our NEW Turtle Discovery Mini Museum
We have moved our exhibits from Kg. Mangkok in Setiu to Kg. Dusun in Kuala Berang, and we are currently in the process of setting up the new museum.
Turtle Awareness Programme in Tioman
Last month, we were invited to conduct a Turtle Conservation Programme with the students of S.K. Tekek on Tioman Island, in conjunction with Berjaya Hotel and Resort’s Tioman Island Clean Up Day (TICD) 2013.
Terrapin Batik—you know you want one!
We have recently produced a few Terrapin Batik designs, and we are selling them to raise funds for our Society. The single-print batiks are priced at RM 30 each, and they come in three colours — navy blue, light blue and maroon. The multi-print batiks are priced at RM 35 each, and they come in various colour combinations.
TCS and Sri KDU organize Turtle Camp at S.K. Pasir Gajah, Kemaman
Last month, a group of 27 teachers and students from Sri KDU Secondary School, Kota Damansara, organized and executed a Turtle Camp for the school students at S.K. Pasir Gajah, Kemaman.

Tioman Island Clean-Up Day (TICD) 2013 with Berjaya Hotels & Resorts
The Turtle Conservation Workshop by the beach aimed at fostering awareness on protecting turtles through interactive and fun-filled learning activities. The children were briefed on the characteristics of different turtle species and the dangers facing them, causing their extinction. The children then participated in group dynamic activities incorporating threats-to-turtles story narration and games.
Sale of turtle eggs makes mockery of conservation efforts
BAGS containing turtle eggs, resembling oversized ping-pong balls, were displayed openly by hawkers at the Pasar Payang market, in Kuala Terengganu. The ones caked with sand were local eggs, while the cleaner ones were apparently from Sabah, or so they say.
Students speak out against animal abuse
A two-day exhibition titled “Save Our Wildlife Exhibition KL ‘13” was held at Berjaya Times Square recently and TCS was invited as one of the exhibitors.
Berjaya lancar program CSR
