Terrapin Nest Adoption

Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS) carries out a River Terrapin Conservation Project in the Kemaman River, Terengganu. Through this project and with the collaboration with the local communities, a maximum number of river terrapin eggs are secured for incubation. Upon emergence, the river terrapin hatchlings are raised for approximately four to five months before they are also released into the river.

This year, as part of our fundraising efforts, we put up our terrapin nests for adoption. Each nest adoption costs RM50, and each nest contains approximately 10 – 25 eggs. You will be furnished with an official tax-deductible receipt and a personalized Certificate of Adoption. You will also receive information about your adopted nest at the end of the hatching season (by June/July), i.e. number of eggs incubated, number of hatchlings emerged, hatching success, etc. All funds raised through the Terrapin Adoption Programme will be used to carry out river terrapin conservation projects in the future.

Upon emergence, all river terrapin hatchlings are marked, weighed and measured.

Then, the hatchlings are raised at the hatchery. Your symbolic adoption allows us to hire a local villager from Kg. Pasir Gajah to perform a complete water change and to feed the terrapin hatchlings daily. He is tasked to clean the head-starting tank too.

Once a year, the head-started terrapins are released into the Kemaman River, in our attempt to repopulate the river. You are invited to release your own adopted terrapins, but if you can't make it, don't worry, we will release them on your behalf.
