We are pleased to announce that Perhilitan has given the approval for us to initiate egg protection programs with local community involvement in 3 villages along the Kemaman River.

The villagers started the project about 2 weeks ago and as of yesterday (1 March 2011), 36 clutches or nests have been protected.  We took Dr Gerald Kuchling along with us yesterday to have a look at the hatcheries constructed by the villagers as well as the three nesting banks (Pasir Pak Kadir, Pasir Pok Yok and Pasir Merbau Eper) we have proposed to Perhilitan to be gazetted as nesting sanctuaries.

Pasir Pok Yok turned out to be an amazing nesting site that had all of us spellbound.  The density of the tracks made by the terrapins and the sight from across the river is truly breathtaking and in Gerald’s words, breathes hope to the survival of the river terrapins.

We were extremely pleased with the efforts of the local fishermen and the village headmen who have supported the projects.

The pictures below will tell a better story.

Acknowledgements to the various JKKK (village committees), village headmen, local villages involved, En. Yusoff Shariff (Perhilitan Director in Terengganu), En. Azuan Alias (Perhilitan Head in Kemaman) and Perhilitan HQ for approving the new projects.
